Piano Trio No. 1 is a piece for the traditional piano trio ensemble(vln.,vlc.,pno),

inspired by the great chamber literature of the nineteenth century. It is also largely

based on jazz style, particularly jazz piano playing. The piece uses rich, quasi-romantic

thematic materials layered over jazz like harmonies. There are also a lot of complex and

sometimes borderline jarring rhythmic figures, especially in the last two movements.

Typical of the piano trio, the piece is set in four movements. The first has a dark and

intense aura and a great example of the lush romantic themes mixed with the jazz

harmonies. The second movement is in a basic ternary form and is a relaxing contrast

to the first movement. It is also somewhat resembling to a jazz ballad. The scherzo is a

rondo, is very sporadic, and passes a lot of rhythms around playfully between the

strings and the piano. The fourth is an exciting finale to the trio and is a bookend to the

first movement in someways. Piano Trio No. 1 makes for a quasi-romantic, jazzy,

different take on the traditional piano trio.
